Highs and Lows of Reading

by Geoff and Patricia Goodman 4 Comments

Geoff and Patricia’s Bio

Over 40 years ago Geoff was introduced to Patricia who was an avid reader whilst he was not. On their first holiday together she bought him a copy of The Godfather, and he became hooked. They both spend many hours reading, especially when on holiday though for convenience they both have Kindle readers to save on the weight.

Back home they can spend an entire evening without speaking save “who is going to make the Tea?”

A very emotional piece, well illustrated and read aloud.

We often think of reading as an act that we do which is good for us because we learn through reading, challenge ourselves through reading and find joy in escaping through reading – but watching and listening to this story of reading reminds me that reading is an act that can also deliver ‘bad’ news. Or, expose injustices we were not aware of, whether it is something personal, local, national or global. Growing up in small-town America was beautiful, peaceful and great – but reading was something that gave me the courage, curiosity, comfort and ability (through scholarships in related fields) to adventure beyond these roots and to get a better picture of myself. But, also the skills to see the beauty and mystique in my hometown (as I often read stories about that area now that I don’t live in that state anymore). Geoff and Patricia’s story of her father reading the letter that may of have changed his life is shocking and sad. It really highlights the different ways reading can shape a life.

Maria gives her views on the #bookstagram hashtag and how she uses hashtagging more widely in her research on popular culture and fan cultures. Ian describes his reading habits and the different ways he uses digital devices and paper based reading materials. He also highlights the importance of stories around reading in the family, referring particularly to the digital story Highs and Lows of Reading […]
